5 things to do in your holiday rental before winter
The season is coming to an end, but your property still needs a little attention before the quieter months.
1. Air the property thoroughly before a long closure
Before closing the property for several weeks or months, open the windows wide to completely renew the indoor air.
Check that the small ventilation grilles and vents are not closed, blocked or covered by furniture or curtains. Permanent airflow helps limit condensation, stale odours and mould. Leave internal and cupboard doors slightly ajar so air can circulate throughout the property.
2. Check the water supply and look for leaks
Inspect taps, visible connections, toilets, the water heater and pipes beneath sinks and washbasins. A small leak may go unnoticed when the property is occupied but cause serious damage during a long absence.
Check for damp patches, marks or unusual smells around sanitary equipment. Where possible and compatible with the installation, turn off the main water supply and clearly inform the person responsible for checking the property.
3. Check doors, windows and shutters
Make sure every door and window closes properly and that locks operate smoothly. Inspect handles, seals, hinges and closing mechanisms.
Ensure shutters are securely fastened or locked so they cannot bang in strong winds. Remember patio doors, secondary entrances, the garage, cellar and any outbuildings.
4. Leave no food accessible
Remove opened products and perishable food. Carefully clean cupboards, worktops, the oven, toaster and anywhere crumbs may remain hidden.
Keep any food left behind in completely airtight containers. Empty all bins and leave no pet food. These precautions prevent unpleasant odours and greatly reduce the risk of ants, cockroaches, mice and other pests.
5. Arrange regular checks of the property
Even when properly prepared, a property should not remain unattended for a long period. Regular visits make it possible to air the rooms, run a little water, check electricity and equipment, collect post and inspect the property after heavy rain or strong winds.
Above all, these visits help quickly identify a leak, breakdown, water ingress, unusual smell or attempted break-in.
A property checked regularly often means a small problem is solved before it becomes a major one.
